The Beginning

The Beginning

Shine Academy Educational Center (SAEC) originated from a day care that Winnie Shikutwa was overseeing at her uncle’s place in Lindi Village, Kibera after she finished secondary school in November 2009 where she was taking care of neighbours babies. She did this for several months then she met well-wishers who used to visit and would give her items like free pampers. By early 2010, a well-wisher found her a better place and the day care was relocated from the slum to Olympic estate then later on changed from day care into a school. SAEC was therefore started in 2010 and was initially registered as a community based organization in April 2010.

Based on this realization, Winnie saw the plight of vulnerable children and was touched by the conditions of these otherwise promising younsters while working as a day-care-taker in one of the homes in Kibera where she offered her services almost on voluntary basis at a fee of khs.25 (a quarter of 1 USD) a day which could barely buy even a loaf of bread. As a result, she went ahead and rented a space to expand and serve more vulnerable children within this community. This gave birth to SAEC that was eventually registered in the in April 2014 by the ministry of education. The school has continued to serve vulnerable children by offering free education and providing free meals during school days.
